How an Each-Way Bet Works
An each-way bet is two bets of the same size: one on your horse to win and one on it to place. A £5 each-way bet costs £10 in total.
The place bet pays a fraction of the win odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5, if your horse finishes in the places your bookmaker is paying. If your horse wins, both bets pay out. If it places, only the place bet pays. If it does neither, you lose both stakes.
Worked Example
You back a horse for £5 each-way at 16/1, with 1/5 odds a place.
- If it wins: the win bet returns £85 and the place bet returns £21, so you get £106 back. That's £96 profit.
- If it places: the place bet returns £21. After your £10 total stake, that's £11 profit.
- If it loses: you lose your £10 total stake.
